Tentative Agreement Reached between AFSCME Locals 3800/3801 University of MN Clerical Workers and the University of Minnesota!!

Here are the highlights of the 2019-2021 Tentative Agreement which was reached on December 11; it took nearly 6 months of organizing and activism by hundreds of members, but there are a lot of wins that were worth waiting for!

1. Across the Board Increases:

  • Year One: 2.25% as of December 23, 2019

  • Year Two: 2.25% as of June 8, 2020

These are in addition to the regularly-occurring 2% step increases people receive on their anniversary date. This means a total of 8.5% (compounding) over the 2 years for people in the range, and 4.5% (compounding) over the two years for people at the top of the range.

2. Between 2 and 9 steps will be removed from the bottom of each classification and anybody in the eliminated steps will be moved up to the new bottom step. This raises the base salary for clerical job classes by 2-18%

3. A $500 lump sum for all employees with 15 years or more of University seniority as of May 1, 2020.

4. Gender neutral contract language and an agreement to meet and confer to identify and discuss best practices for a respectful and welcoming workplace for transgender, gender nonconforming and non-binary workers.

5. Additionally, we agreed to a meet and confer on Climate Change; language that clarifies use of sick leave to arrange childcare; moved a number of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) at the back of the contract into specific articles or appendices; and referred several issues to labor management committees for further discussion.

A more detailed list of changes will be provided at lunchtime information sessions the week of January 6. Details on these sessions will be sent out soon.

Members will be able to vote on our new contract the week of January 13. We will have onsite voting at each of our campuses, with a mail-in ballot option for members who do not work on any of the campuses. Notice of the vote will be mailed to members’ home addresses.

Be sure to come to our Membership Meeting next week to find out more about voting, thank the negotiating committee, and enjoy some union fellowship. We will have a shortened agenda, followed by a potluck dinner! The meeting is Tuesday, December 17 at 5:30 pm in Peik Hall Room 48 (East Bank), with video connections for greater Minnesota.

Our clerical bargaining committee would like to thank the 1000+ members who signed petitions, sent emails, came out for rallies, wore green on Fridays and talked to their friends, coworkers and bosses about the #FightForOurFuture. Due to all your efforts, we have a contract where members will make real economic progress.

In solidarity,

3800/3801 Bargaining Committee members:
