Union Action Updates

November 17, 2023

A WIN IS A WIN!

When we stand up and push back against management's violation of the contract, using language to fit their needs, and we come out with a posted 14-day change of shift notice and overtime being paid out for the weekend patrols, that is a WIN!

If we win 1 out of 10 it is huge. This meeting this morning shows the power in numbers and engaged union members.

I want to thank Terry Kapfer, Jean Zimmerman, Leslie Vaughn, Kelly Chirpich, Drew Sykes, and Bryan Kirsch for pursuing this issue and pushing it. We are not done yet; local 221 leadership is determined to get the $1/hr. for the 7/7 shops, we are anticipating a meeting with the MMB commissioner very soon.

We are also pursuing the 11pm start time for area wide drivers when split. If this language does not affect you, stand by because if there is an issue in the future you will need the union's support and voice to represent you.

Bart Andersen, Interim Executive Director of AFSCME Council 5, announced on April 8, 2024 the following:
[T]he Minnesota State Senate passed H.F. 3437 off the floor
TO DEDICATE THE BRIDGE ON HIGHWAY 169 AND ROCKFORD ROAD AS THE "MICHAEL GAU MEMORIAL BRIDGE".
This bill has now passed both the Minnesota House and the Senate and now heads to Governor's Walz's desk for his signature.

Michael was a dedicated Local 221, Council 5 union member and public employee at MnDOT with all of you.

[Council 5] not only provided our sincere condolences and heard about how great of a father, worker, volunteer firefighter, and community man he was, but we also delivered a check from our union's Fallen Heroes Fund to the Gau family.

The AFSCME Fallen Heroes Fund provides relief and immediate assistance to members who fall victim to natural disasters and other tragedies. Since its inception the fund has provided financial assistance to nearly 5,000 union members, including multiple AFSCME Council 5 members.

Our union looks out for our fellow union brothers and sisters and loved ones - and we always will! We honor Michael's life.
