Rick Scott Political Activism Award: AFSCME Council 5 Corrections Policy Committee

The Rick Scott Political Activism Award is presented each year to an individual member, a local union, or a group of members or local unions in recognition of outstanding work in electoral, legislative and other political activity on behalf of our union. This years' award was presented to AFSCME Council 5's Corrections Policy Committee (CPC).

As with so many of the stories you have heard about our union’s awards’ namesakes, Rick Scott was an incredible leader in political work for AFSCME. Rick founded our union’s philosophy of engaging our members deep within our political and electoral efforts. He instilled this across our work.

CPC members organized one of the last in-person, large gatherings at the Minnesota Capitol in March 2020 shortly before the Capitol and our state largely shut down due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. CPC members took their ongoing commitment to our union to the halls of power and worked collectively to push against being forced to work 12-hour shifts, protected our pensions, and to secure safe staffing across the DOC and in all workplaces.

Congratulations to the activists and dedicated members of the AFSCME Council 5 Corrections Policy Committee - and thank you for your commitment to our union and our labor movement!
