Council 5 Training Program


Council 5 provides a variety of Training Programs throughout the year. Scheduled programs are listed below.

Registration: Members must be registered by a local officer. To register contact: Maya Hendricks, 651-287-0565, or 1-800-652-9791, ext. 565, or email: maya.hendricks@afscmemn.org. Those registering for trainings in Duluth can contact either Maya or Leslie Evans in the Duluth office. Leslie can be reached at 218-722-0577, or email: leslie.evans@afscmemn.org. Please contact Maya for special diet needs.

Time: 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, unless otherwise noted.

Cost: Basic Steward Training is $40 per person.  This includes $20 for the Manual and $10 per day for lunch.  All other prescheduled training is $10 to cover lunch.

New Officer Training

Learn about your new roles and responsibility as a Local Union Officer.  This class will address the “Nuts and Bolts” and the mechanics of how to function as a Chair Officer or Board Member including your role at meetings.  Treasurers are welcome but should also attend the Financial Responsibility Training.  Local Union Leadership training for the entire Executive Board is available on request.

For anyone in the local who signs checks or conducts audits. Formerly Treasurer's Training. Taught by the International Union and Council 5 staff.

Customized Training

The emphasis for the 2008 calendar is to offer education that strengthens local union development.  This includes leadership development, increasing activism among members and building power through union building.  We believe the best way to do this is to customize the training according to the local needs.  We ask local officers to invite us to confer about how we can help your Union become more active and visible.  Below is a sample of training that can be developed for your local union.

Union Building Workshops:
Talking to co-workers one-on-one, Organizing around Issues; Union Building , Union 101, Local Union Development
Communications Workshops:
Media Relations, Developing Effective Messages

Executive Board Training, Negotiations Training, Labor Relations (including Labor Management Training), Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Contract Campaign Training, Strike Preparation, Facilitation Requests

Cancellations: To cancel, contact Maya Hendricks.  Locals will be billed $10 per person for late cancellations.  A cancellation will be considered late if we are notified after the food has been ordered, usually about a week before the scheduled class.
